Folate (B9) and vitamin B12 are often talked about as “blood vitamins” or “pregnancy nutrients”, but their importance goes far beyond that. They are essential for energy, mood, digestion, detoxification, fertility, nervous system health, and proper cell division.

What’s rarely explained is how deeply dependent both folate (B9) and B12 are on gut health. You can eat the best foods in the world, liver, eggs, leafy greens, and still end up deficient if your gut isn’t doing its job.

What Are Folate, also known as Vitamin B9, and Vitamin B12? (In Simple Terms)

Folate (vitamin B9)
Folate is needed for:

  • DNA synthesis and repair

  • Cell division and growth

  • Healthy red blood cell formation

  • Fertility and pregnancy support

  • Proper methylation (detoxification, hormone balance, mood regulation)

Cobalamin (vitamin B12)
B12 is essential for:

  • Nervous system function

  • Brain health and cognition

  • Energy production

  • Red blood cell formation

  • Protecting nerve insulation (myelin sheath)

These two vitamins work together. A deficiency in one often masks or worsens a deficiency in the other.

Where Do We Get Folate and B12 From?

From a traditional nutrient-dense diet:

Rich folate foods

  • Liver (especially lamb or beef liver)

  • Egg yolks

  • Dark leafy greens (gently cooked)

  • Lentils and chickpeas (properly soaked and cooked)

  • Bone marrow and slow-cooked meats

Rich B12 foods

  • Liver and other organ meats

  • Shellfish (mussels, oysters)

  • Red meat

  • Eggs

  • Cultured dairy (kefir, yoghurt, cheese)

Important: B12 is only found naturally in animal foods.

But eating these foods is only half the story.

Your gut influences folate and B12 in four major ways:

1. Gut Bacteria Help Produce and Recycle Folate

Certain beneficial gut bacteria, particularly Bifidobacteria and Lactobacilli, can produce active forms of folate directly in the colon.

While not all of this folate is absorbed, it contributes to:

  • Local gut health

  • Supporting the intestinal lining

  • Reducing overall folate demand from food

When dysbiosis develops and beneficial bacteria decline, this internal folate support disappears

2. Healthy Gut Lining Is Essential for Absorption

Both folate and B12 are absorbed through the intestinal wall. When the gut lining becomes inflamed or damaged (often called leaky gut), absorption drops significantly.

Common causes include:

  • Antibiotics

Inflammation, detoxification, infections, and stress all increase the body’s need for folate and B12.

Dysbiosis creates:

  • Fermented vegetables, such as turnips, carrots, or garlic

Eat vitamin-rich animal foods regularly

  • Liver once weekly (75–100 g / 2½–3½ oz)

  • Egg yolks daily

  • Shellfish weekly

Reduce gut irritants

  • Refined sugar

  • Ultra-processed foods
